Manchester United fell to their first UEFA Champions League defeat of the season after suffering a goal in each half against Atletico Madrid in what was an underwhelming display.

United got off to an utterly terrible start, going behind inside the first minute. Alex Baena beat Diogo Dalot, before findining Pablo Barrios, who fired the ball into the net.

Michael Carrick's side regrouped after the early setback, and had some chances of their own, particularly through Bryan Mbeumo, who had two chances excellently saved by Jan Oblak.

In the second half, United continued to up their game, yet they were still culpable to some defensive errors and being get at defensively. Bruno Fernandes hit the bar from a quick corner midway through the second half.

However, it all changed moments later, when Leny Yoro was sent off after a VAR check for seemingly bringing Jonathan David down. Atletico doubled their lead a few minutes later, with Ademola Lookman sealing the win for the Spanish side.

Here are how the players fared in another dismal night:

Senne Lammens 6

The Belgian made a couple of decent stops, while also coming out to claim the ball on a number of occasions. Could not do much with either of the goals.

Diogo Dalot 3

Poor yet again. He got caught out by Baena very early on for the opener, and he struggled to recover throughout the game. Remained unsure in his play and he was constantly attacked by Atleti's forwards.

Leny Yoro 6

One of United's better players, looking very good on and off the ball. His passing was on point and he defended very well for the majority of the match. Really unfortunate to see red, spoiling what had been a very good display.

Lisandro Martinez 5

The Argentine was not incredible throughout the match, but he should be getting a top-class rating for his interview after the game. Called out the board and the lack of investment in the team, describing the performance as "very, very poor", before backing Carrick and slamming Jason Wilcox. A much-needed show of emotion from a player who is not really having the best of time on the pitch.

Ayden Heaven 6

Started at left-back, and he actually did really well for most of the game. Desperately unlucky not to get enough on his block for the opener, yet other than that, he defended very well.

Carlos Baleba 7

United's best player on the pitch. Fought for every ball and injected a sense of energy. His influence waned as the match wore on, yet his passing and tackles provided some snap to the midfield.

Andrey Santos 6

Provided some sloppy passes, but he quickly settled into the game and improved. Constantly dropped deep to get on the ball, and he dictated most of the play up until the red card. Tried to control the game.

Bruno Fernandes 4

Once again, the United captain looks poor and unfit. Showed some rare moments of quality, but he repeatedly lost possession and looked frustrated off the ball. Other than hitting the bar from a quick corner, he did not do much in the final third.

Youri Tielemans 6

An improved performance from his shocker at the weekend. Created some chances for Mbeumo in the first half, yet he tired in the second half and as a result, his influence dipped.

Marcus Rashford 5

A frustrating performance from the forward. Probably should have done better from a Martinez pass, and he constantly tried to dribble past the Atletico defenders, to no avail. Offered some pace on the counter.

Bryan Mbeumo 6

United's most threatening forward yet again. Probably should have buried one of his two big chances in the first half. However, he looked sharp and looked to press from the front, even if his teammates did not help him that much.

Substitutes

Mason Mount 6

Tried to inject some quality and energy in midfield, but apart from some neat touches, he could not do much else.

Amad 6

Did not get into the game that much apart from one break down the left that led to a cross being blocked.

Joshua Zirkzee 6

Barely got into the game.

Harry Maguire 6

A late substitution after the second goal.

Matheus Cunha 6

Brought on after the second goal.

Head Coach: Michael Carrick 6

Apart from the horrific start, over the course of the game, it seemed as if Carrick got his team selection spot on, particularly given the options he had available. He probably should have made some of the attacking substitutions sooner, particularly bringing Cunha on earlier, yet he surely would have wanted more attacking options at his disposal. Martinez's comments will serve as a headache for Carrick in terms of the atmosphere in the dressing room, but at least he knows he is being backed by his players.
