Manchester United fought from behind to avoid suffering three Premier League defeats in a row, as a late second-half flurry got them a 2-2 draw in their final match at Goodison Park against Everton.
Just like so many times this season, United started off very slow in the first-half, losing many of their duels and being sloppy on the ball.
Everton, who were the stronger side throughout most of the match, started off well, and they got their opening goal on the 19-minute mark. The United defence failed to deal with an Everton corner, trying to clear the ball on a number of occasions, only for it to fall to Beto, who fired it past Andre Onana.
The Toffees were 2-0 up just a few minutes later, after Ruben Amorim's side were caught out on their left-hand side. Onana parried a shot high up into the air, only for Abdoulaye Doucoure to get on the end of the rebound, with Harry Maguire and the United goalkeeper being left helpless as the ball went into the net.
It was an uphill task for United, with them struggling to even carve any opportunities on goal.
After some changes to the team deep into the second-half, Amorim's side got one back thanks to a delightful free-kick from Bruno Fernandes, with United scoring from their first shot on target of the game, all the way in the 72nd minute.
The momentum shifted from that point on and United looked like a completely different team, controlling the play and keeping Everton penned in their own half. United got their equaliser in the 80th minute, as the ball fell to Manuel Ugarte on the edge of the box following a set-piece, with the Uruguayan firing a perfect half-volley that sailed past Jordan Pickford. The perfect time for Ugarte to get his first United goal.
United pushed in search of a winner, but they came very close to going back to Manchester with no points. Deep into stoppage time, Onana saved a shot, only for Ashley Young to seemingly get to the ball first, before he fell to the ground, with Maguire and Matthijs de Ligt being judged to have pulled his shirt. The referee gave the penalty, but after a lengthy VAR check, it was ruled out.
United got the 2-2 draw at the end, which did not seem likely given the way things were going for the first 70 minutes.
Here are our player ratings:
Andre Onana 4
The United goalkeeper had a really disappointing first-half, and while he had no protection in front of him, he could have dealt with the second Everton goal in particular, palming it away from goal rather than into the air. Never really looked completely comfortable, and the disallowed penalty came from him once again not completely dealing with a shot. Got down well to save an attempt in the second-half.
Matthijs de Ligt 3
Constantly struggled with Everton looking to play balls in between him and Harry Maguire. He could not settle down and was very nervous on the ball, even playing Beto onside for the opening goal. Conceded a corner after a dreadful pass back to Onana.
Harry Maguire 2
In Saturday's match, Maguire looked like the player that struggled so much two years ago. Failed to track the run for the second goal, before he failed to see Doucoure coming as he got the jump on him. Together with De Ligt, he never really looked comfortable.
Noussair Mazraoui 5
Not great, but not the worst from the defence. He looked alright on the ball and seemed to soldier on after taking a knock to the knee. Went off for Leny Yoro in the second-half.
Diogo Dalot 4
Continued to struggle at right wing-back. Did not offer anything going forward and he found it difficult to keep up with the match's intensity.
Casemiro 4
A rather strange decision from Amorim to pick Casemiro when he had Manuel Ugarte back available. And it was clear that the manager probably should have done that given United looked much better with Fernandes and Ugarte in midfield in the latter stages. He cannot keep up with the pace of the game and his passing was atrocious at times.
Manuel Ugarte 6
On his return from injury, he found it difficult to match Everton's intensity in the first-half. However, he settled down once he was paired with Fernandes in the second-half, and got a crucial equaliser with a brilliant half-volley to mark his first goal for United.
Patrick Dorgu 7
Probably the only bright spark for United throughout the first-half. He constantly looked to drive at defenders and had a certain aggression in his game that barely no other United player had in the opening 45 minutes. He was a live-wire and was constantly getting fouled. Needs to improve on his final ball, but there is definitely a player in him that could work in Amorim's system.
Bruno Fernandes 6
Started further forward and did not look at his best. Constantly gave the ball away and was growing frustrated at United's lack of threat going forward. However, his sensational free-kick helped spur the team forward and his influence grew when he was deeper in midfield.
Joshua Zirkzee 4
Seemed a long way away from his impressive performance last week in North London. Did not offer a goal threat and was anonymous for most of the game. Seemed to pick up a bit after United's first goal.
Rasmus Hojlund 3
Watching Hojlund play right now is painful. He can't seem to get into games and whatever he tries is not coming off for him. Constantly bullied by James Tarkowski and Jarrad Branthwaite, and did not receive any service in the box at all. The fact United performed much better when he came off is a sad indictment of his influence on the team. Needs to get his confidence back some way or another.
Substitutions
Alejandro Garnacho 7
Looked very good from off the bench and gave United a lift with him willing to run at defenders. Won a number of free-kicks and gave Everton trouble down his side. Needs to produce more consistent performances, especially when starting.
Chido Obi 6
Offered more than Hojlund up front, and did some of the simple things right. Linked up well with Zirkzee and possibly could have got a break on goal had the Dutchman found him with a cross at one point.
Leny Yoro 5
Came on for Mazraoui and seemed to help United get on the front foot with his willingness to push forward.
Manager - Ruben Amorim: 5
His starting 11 was quite questionable given Casemiro's horrific display at North London. His team did not offer anything going forward in the first hour or so, and the defending was shambolic. His changes made a significant difference, yet he will feel let down by the fact that United did not produce a full performance similar to what they did in the final 20 minutes.
He is probably being let down by the fact the players are not good enough, but United's form in the Premier League is definitely something he needs to be worried about.
