Player Ratings: Hull City 2-0 Manchester United

Manchester United started their Premier League campaign with a disastrous defeat at the hands of newly promoted side Hull City, with set-pieces proving to be a weakness for Michael Carrick's side.

United came into the game looking to control the pace of the play, looking comfortable in possession. The away side did not create many chances, but they were keeping Hull at arm's length.

That all changed when a corner was flung into the penalty area, forcing Senne Lammens to make an incredible save, but Semi Ajayi reacted quicker than the United defenders for the rebound, slotting it into the net. Hull utilised their momentum, and just a few minutes later, they doubled their advantage thanks to another set-piece, this time Nobel Mendy getting on the end of a free-kick to make it 2-0.

United made a number of changes over the second half, but they could not break down a stubborn Hull backline, with none of the United forwards managing to find any space to get shots off.

As a result, United ended the game with a 2-0 defeat, giving Carrick a nightmare start to the campaign.

Here are how the United players fared in a dismal day:

Senne Lammens 7

One of the few players who came away from the game with their head held high. Made a couple of smart saves, first from Oli McBurnie, and then also for the first goal. Could not do anything with the two goals. United's best performer.

Noussai Mazraoui 4

Tidy in possession, but barely offered anything going forward. Could not get the right cross towards the forwards, but realistically no cross from any player was reaching the target. Cleared danger well at one point in the first half, but other than that, he looked vulnerable.

Harry Maguire 5

Maguire was the only defender capable of dealing with Hull's physicality, and he tried to dominate aerially. However, he held Mazraoui for the opening goal, and should have commanded the box much better.

Ayden Heaven 4

Outmuscled for the opening goal and never really looked comfortable dealing with the pressure that McBurnie put him under. A tough afternoon for the young defender.

Luke Shaw 4

While he was alright defensively, Shaw did not offer anything going forward, apart from a couple of crosses from deep. He was finding it hard to get on the ball in dangerous areas. An upgrade is needed.

Andrey Santos 5

Looked promising at the start, constantly wanting to get on the ball. However, he made a couple of needless fouls and at times gave the ball away. He did certain things very well, but he needed more support from his teammates.

Youri Tielemans 3

Poor throughout the game. Looked badly off the pace and could not help out Santos enough in the middle of the park. Did not produce many forward passes and was not his creative self.

Bruno Fernandes 3

Poor from start to finish. Tried to make things happen, but nothing was happening for him, with crosses not reaching the target and his shots being too tame. Fernandes tends to start seasons slow, and this seems to be the case yet again.

Bryan Mbeumo 5

United's most dangerous attacking player in the first half, looking like a threat and always wanting to create chances. Forced a decent save and also tried his luck with an acrobatic attempt, but he could not find the back of the net. Faded in the second half.

Matheus Cunha 4

Faded in and out of the game, as he usually does when playing down the middle. Did not turn up and looks much more comfortable playing on the left.

Patrick Dorgu 3

A frustrating afternoon for Dorgu. He was the one getting into great positions for United, getting three shots off in the first half, but he lacked any real quality. Struggled to get others into the game and was taken off at half-time.

Substitutions

Marcus Rashford 6

Came on for his first competitive United appearance in 18 months, and he immediately showed that he wanted to make an impact. Drove forward towards the Hull defenders and was looking to make things happen. Could end up pushing for a start next week.

Kobbie Mainoo 4

Kept the ball well, but he did not make any sort of impact for United. Seemed much more content to pass the ball back and forth.

Benjamin Sesko 4

Brought on to act as a focal point, but United could not find him in the penalty area. He was rushed to play, and it was immediately clear that he has not played since May and is not ready for high-intensity matches.

Diogo Dalot 5

An improvement on Mazraoui and offered more going forward. Should have started.

Shea Lacey 5

Could not get involved, but whenever he had the ball, he looked to push forward.

Head Coach - Michael Carrick 3

His first Premier League game as permanent United head coach, and it could not have gone any worse. United did not look fit and sharp enough, and the worries that the set-piece resilience would fade away with Casemiro's departure came into effect. He probably should have started Dalot over Mazraoui and the Cunha up front experiment did not work at all. Carrick still needs additions to the squad, especially at left-back and as a backup striker, but the team was not set up well to face Hull's physicality, and should have done so much better. Needs a win against Ipswich.
