Manchester United fell to a shocking 3-0 defeat in the Manchester Derby against their arch rivals Manchester City on Sunday.

City started on top, but United quickly grew into the game in the first-half, despite Altay Bayindir, who was chosen ahead of new signing Senne Lammens, being called into action on occasions.

Phil Foden opened the scoring for the home side in the 18th minute with a neat header after a Jeremy Doku cross.

United improved as the half wore on, but they could not find an equaliser before the break, and were struggling to create plenty of attacking threat.

Following half-time, United started sharp, but they fell two goals behind after a loose touch prompted Doku to find Erling Haaland, who lobbed it over Bayindir. City could have made it three a few minutes later, but Haaland hit the post with an open goal.

However, Haaland eventually got his second to seal the match, racing through on goal before slotting it into the net.

United had two massive opportunities in the closing stages, one falling to Bryan Mbeumo, and another to Casemiro, but they could not find the back of the net. Mbeumo was also denied excellently by Gianluigi Donnarumma on one instance.

Altay Bayindir 5

He had a concerning moment early on when he could not get the ball out of his feet, and he largely had no chance with any of the goals. Remains to be seen if he is picked next week or if Lammens enters the fray.

Leny Yoro 5

Not the best of displays from Leny Yoro, with him being constantly hassled by Jeremy Doku and was being pressed by the City front line.

Matthijs de Ligt 5

Constantly contested Haaland for duels, but he was struggling to get the better of the Norwegian.

Luke Shaw 4

He had his poorest game of the season so far, with Haaland outmuscling him for the second City goal, while he also did not look good enough for the third.

Noussair Mazraoui 5

Started his first match since the UEFA Europa League Final and was not too bad for large parts of the game, but he was off the pace for the second goal. Struggled to offer any threat going forward and was substituted.

Manuel Ugarte 5

A game of two halves for Manuel Ugarte. While he looked adventurous and energetic in the first, winning plenty of balls as United pressed up the pitch, he was shambolic in the second. Made plenty of loose touches and loose passes, one leading to a City goal.

Bruno Fernandes 4

Another relatively underwhelming performance from the United captain. He failed to track Foden for the goal and was misplacing plenty of his forward passes. Bruno Fernandes simply has to improve, as he will most likely not be dropped.

Patrick Dorgu 4

While Patrick Dorgu was relatively good at the back, he offered nothing going forward, with his crosses being wayward, leaving Benjamin Sesko starved of service. Good physically, but nothing else today.

Bryan Mbeumo 6

United best player on the pitch by a country mile. He was constantly being given the ball in the absence of Matheus Cunha and was often being left to do it all on his own. Denied brilliantly by Donnarumma, and somehow missed a glaring opportunity a few minutes later.

Amad 5

Started on the left of the front three, but was not as influential as he was last season. Improved when he moved to wing-back, but still struggled to create any openings to his teammates.

Benjamin Sesko 6

A relatively quiet display, but one of the few threats that United offered City in the first-half. Made a darting run before being denied by Donnarumma, and also swiveled before having a shot calmly palmed away by the goalkeeper. Faded in the second-half and was substituted.

Substitutes

Harry Maguire 5

Came on to offer United more attacking threat, but it left them more open at the back due to his lack of pace, and City exploited it.

Kobbie Mainoo 6

Brought on to make an impact, and he looked good on the ball, and on one occasion did excellently to find Dorgu, who failed to find the forwards with his cross.

Joshua Zirkzee 5

Offered little impact on the game.

Casemiro 5

Probably should have started today, and while he provided some balance, he also missed a glorious chance.

Manager - Ruben Amorim: 5

While he made a number of huge calls by starting Bayindir, Ugarte and Shaw, he has come under increased scrutiny due to the result. The first-half showed hints of what his system could offer, but United were underwhelming in the second and the midfield duo was constantly being found out. Needs to make some adjustments, and quickly.
