Player Ratings: Manchester United 0-1 Manchester City

Manchester United suffered a crushing defeat in the Manchester Derby, despite playing most of the game with a numerical advantage over their rivals.
The match was off to a feisty start, with United looking to counter and City having most of the ball. It all changed midway through the first half, when Phil Foden was shown a straight red card after kicking out at Bruno Fernandes when the two players were challenging for the ball near the touchline.
United seized possession after that, but they barely created any opportunities in that half, with them coming closest thanks to a Marcus Rashford free-kick that cannoned off the post.
Michael Carrick's side struggled to create chances, with the front line looking off the pace. City then went in front in the 60th minute after Patrick Dorgu was dispossessed, and Josko Gvardiol crossed the ball towards Enzo Fernandez and Erling Haaland, with the latter getting on the end of it. It was initially ruled out for offside, but after a VAR check, the goal was amazingly given, despite Fernandez clearly being in an offside position and interfering with play.
United barely mustered any shots on Gianluigi Donnarumma's goal after that, with the biggest chance coming in stoppage time, as Bryan Mbeumo had a shot saved by the Italian. As a result, United suffered yet another defeat in what has been a disappointing start to the season.
Here are how the United players fared in a shocking display:
Senne Lammens 6
The Belgian made a good save from Fernandez to tip it onto the post, and he was very unlucky with the goal. He had made a movement thinking Fernandez was going to head it, and struggled to readjust to save from Haaland.
Diogo Dalot 3
Another poor performance from Dalot on his 250th appearance for the club. He struggled to contain Antoine Semenyo, was poor on and off the ball, and was a source of frustration for many fans. Old Trafford was fuming at one point in the first half when he was needlessly offside.
Harry Maguire 5
One of United's better defenders, but that is not saying much. Dealt with many of the aerial balls, but was not his convincing self.
Lisandro Martinez 5
Had plenty of the ball, but did not inject any urgency. Had some lacklustre passing and was also slow to react at times.
Patrick Dorgu 3
Started at left-back, and he was far from convincing. He was constantly chasing the ball and leaving space for City's forwards. His loose pass, together with him not sticking to his position led to the City goal. Seems like he is more suited to playing further forward.
Kobbie Mainoo 7
United's best player, yet again. Tidy in and out of possession, and showed fight to try to make things happen. Desperately unlucky not to score with a shot from outside of the box that hit the inside of the post. Tried to increase the tempo, but he was not helped by his teammates.
Youri Tielemans 5
Seemed tidy on the ball at times, but he was also slowing down the play too much when United were trying to push forward against 10 men.
Bryan Mbeumo 5
Tried shots from long range when he probably had better options, but at least he tried to make things happen. Struggled to get the better of Gvardiol, and when he did get past the City defence, he was stifled by Donnarumma.
Bruno Fernandes 4
Produced a wayward pass that put Haaland through early on, yet he was also on the receiving end of a Foden kick to get the City man sent off. Struggled to create chances, aside from a couple of neat passes in and around the box. Not a good game from the United captain.
Marcus Rashford 6
One of United's biggest threats, looking to drive forward and take the game to the City backline. He could not get the end product sorted out and probably could have capitalised on Matheus Nunes looking slightly shaky early on.
Matheus Cunha 4
A disappointing match from the Brazilian. Cunha was trying to do too much and was not getting into the right pockets of space. Struggled yet again when deployed up front.
Substitutes
Benjamin Sesko 5
Brought on midway through the second half, but he could not get on the ball enough.
Joshua Zirkzee 5
Tried to make an impact, but ultimately brought on too late.
Head Coach - Michael Carrick 4
Made the bold decision to start a very attacking line-up against City and despite that, not start Sesko, opting for a team that is quick on the counter. It came to bite him back, as when Foden was sent off, United really lacked creativity to break City down. He should have brought Sesko on much earlier, as United really lacked a focal point up front. Strange that he did not give Noussair Mazraoui some minutes given how much Dalot and Dorgu were struggling. His side lacked any form of urgency and creativity, which is very worrying when considering that they were up against 10 men.
Carrick is now in a very tough spot, having won just four points from four matches. An improvement is needed immediately, or else he will be in trouble, unfortunately.
