Player Ratings: Manchester United 1-2 Leeds United

Manchester United returned to action after 24 days without a game with a narrow defeat at home to Leeds United in a chaotic clash at Old Trafford on Monday night.

Michael Carrick was forced into four changes, particularly due to suspensions and knocks, and the rust was clearly there within the team at the start. Noah Okafor gave Leeds a very early lead after getting on the end of a cross, with Leny Yoro being seemingly fouled by Dominic Calvert-Lewin in the build-up, but nothing was given, and United went a goal behind.

United seemingly recovered for a few minutes, but Leeds then went down the other end and scored again, with Okafor getting on the scoresheet once again after the United defence failed to deal with the opposition's attempts at a pass.

In the second half, United were dealt a massive blow when Lisandro Martinez was sent off for what seemed to be pulling Calvert-Lewin's hair, even if he had been elbowed right before.

United rallied and they got a goal back thanks to Casemiro, but they eventually ran out of time, with Leeds coming away as winners.

Senne Lammens 5

Made a couple of decent stops, especially in the opening stages of the game. Could not do much for the two goals, and he put United under pressure with a very loose pass that almost led to a third goal.

Noussair Mazraoui 2

A very, very poor game from the Moroccan. He seemed uncomfortable with having to deal with Okafor all game, and was shocking in and out of possession. Made one crucial tackle, but was horrible for the rest of it.

Leny Yoro 3

Constantly bullied by Calvert-Lewin, and struggled on the ball. Settled down gradually, but it was far from a convincing performance.

Lisandro Martinez 3

Made a stunning last-ditch challenge to keep United in the game, yet he was then shockingly sent off for seemingly grasping Calvert-Lewin's hair. A tough job was made all the more tougher for United following his red card, and he will be a huge miss for United in the upcoming games.

Luke Shaw 3

Started very slowly, but gradually grew into the game. Made a couple of neat lobbed passes, but seemed slow, and was struggling to get back and defend.

Casemiro 4

A game of two halves for the Brazilian. Absolutely dire in the first half, losing possession on multiple occasions and looking very slow to recover whenever he had to deal with the Leeds midfielders. In the second half, he pushed forward, and eventually got United a goal back after connecting to Fernandes's cross. He seemed United's likeliest goalscorer.

Manuel Ugarte 3

A scapegoat for many fans, but on the whole, he was not as poor as many made him out to be. Lost the ball on a couple of occasions early in the game, and then he failed to stop the cross for the first goal. Did not offer much in possession, but battled well to get the ball back on several occasions. He just does not seem good enough to cut it at this level.

Bruno Fernandes 5

Worked tirelessly to try and get United back in the game, but cut a frustrated figure as he dropped back to get on the ball. Got his 17th assist of the campaign with a fine cross for Casemiro, but was reckless on the ball at times. United's chief creator.

Amad 5

One of United's best players on the pitch. Proved to be the primary source of threat in the first half, yet he was quickly shut down in the second half. Needed to receive the ball more when he had the beating of the Leeds backline.

Matheus Cunha 4

Showed flashes of positivity, and was very dangerous at times, yet he was marked out of the game. Worked a lot to defend and make up for the numerical disadvantage.

Benjamin Sesko 4

He was so close to getting United level but Darlow made an excellent save. Barely had a kick and could not get on the ball enough. Struggled.

Substitutes

Diogo Dalot 5

Came on and was rather decent on and off the ball. Looked much better than Mazraoui.

Bryan Mbeumo 5

Offered a positive spark from off the bench, looking to attack the Leeds backline. Yet he could not get the vital moment to earn United a point.

Head Coach - Michael Carrick 4

A very frustrating night for Carrick, with his first defeat at Old Trafford as United head coach. He was forced to making a number of changes, but the team out there should have done enough to get at least a point. Having been without a game for so long, United needed to start strong, but they were slow off the blocks and could not get going. The second half was much better, but he should have probably made a change at the break, especially given how dire the first half was.
