Manchester United fell to another home defeat after they were beaten 3-1 by Brighton on Sunday, leaving United 13th in the Premier League.
United went a goal behind early on after a quick break from Brighton led to Yankuba Minteh having a tap-in. The home side fought back, and deservedly got level after a challenge on Joshua Zirkzee led to a penalty, which Bruno Fernandes finished into the net.
However, the second-half was shocking from United, with Brighton outclassing Ruben Amorim's side across all fronts, and they went ahead again through Kaoru Mitoma. The performance was summed up by the third and final goal, which came from Andre Onana fumbling a cross into the path of Georginio Rutter, who had an empty net to finish in.
United lacked any sort of fight in the final few minutes, and they failed to threaten the Brighton defence, stumbling to a 3-1 loss. Throughout the game, United mustered just one shot on target, and it came from the penalty.
Here are the player ratings from another horrible day out at Old Trafford:
Andre Onana 2
A calamitous error for the third goal that completely killed any hope of a comeback from United and perfectly summed up the home side's performance. He was looking comfortable with the ball to his feet earlier in the game, yet errors continue to blight his United career. Seriously under pressure, and could be dropped for Altay Bayindir.
Leny Yoro 5
Looked relatively comfortable in defence, and was not at fault for any of the goals. Probably one of the few players who was comfortable throughout the match.
Harry Maguire 4
Struggled to make any interceptions and win ground and aerial duels today. He seemed to keep the players on for the first goal, and was slow getting back. A shadow of his colossal performances of late.
Matthijs de Ligt 6
United's best player of the back-three, winning plenty of his duels and looking very solid both with and without the ball. One of the few positives from a dismal day for United.
Noussair Mazraoui 3
He was ball-watching for the opening goal, letting Mitoma run free to set up Minteh. Mazraoui was struggling without the ball, especially when faced with Mitoma running towards him. On the ball, he was very good, linking up play well with Amad, but his defensive frailties were evident throughout the whole match.
Manuel Ugarte 5
His usual, combative self off the ball, winning a number of challenges at both ends of the pitch. However, he did not stamp his authority on the game and was run ragged by a fluent Brighton midfield. Subbed off in the second-half.
Kobbie Mainoo 5
Provided a touch of quality in the United midfield but was finding it difficult to keep up with Brighton's midfielders. Did not offer anything in the second-half and was hooked off with Ugarte.
Diogo Dalot 7
Probably United's best player on the day. He was good at retaining possession and was giving the Brighton defence a hard time, making a number of threatening runs. Made a number of crucial blocks and challenges in United's half. He should have had a free-kick when he made a lung-busting run towards the Brighton box. Needs to produce similar performances on a consistent basis.
Bruno Fernandes 5
Scored United's penalty but he was pretty anonymous throughout the rest of the game, especially in the second-half. Did not stamp his authority on the match and looked visibly frustrated.
Amad Diallo 6
One of the few players that wanted to take on the Brighton defence. While he could not follow up his hat-trick in midweek with a goal today, he was pretty dangerous down the line, and was vital in the press, particularly for the action that won the penalty. Unlike on Thursday, nothing really fell for him other than that.
Joshua Zirkzee 6
Held up the ball excellently and linked well with the other forwards, especially during the first-half. Won the penalty with a neat turn in the Brighton box. Looked effective, but at the same time was contained very well by the Brighton defence after the break.
Substitutions
Toby Collyer 5
He was not great in possession and seemed very eager to push forward in search of winning the ball. Some valuable minutes in the tank for him though.
Alejandro Garnacho 5
Did not look like he was going to beat his man and was really weak on the ball. Practically ineffective.
Antony 5
In what looked like his final appearance for United this season, he did not make an impact. Sums up his time at the club.
Rasmus Hojlund 5
Worked hard but practically did not have any meaningful touches. Zirkzee probably deserves to start on Thursday.
Manager - Ruben Amorim: 6
Amorim desperately needs to be backed this month with some new signings, as it is clear that these are not the players that he wants for his system. He identified that United will need to perform at their best against teams like Brighton, not just Arsenal and Liverpool, and he was proven right. The team is not creating enough chances and that needs to be addressed before it is too late.
United have scored just 27 goals in 22 league games this season, which is only better than Crystal Palace (25), Leicester City (23), Ipswich Town (20), Everton (18) and Southampton (15). That is the first issue that badly needs to be sorted out.
United will take a break from the Premier League for now, as we welcome Rangers at Old Trafford on Thursday in the UEFA Europa league.
