Manchester United returned to winning ways on Saturday evening, beating Chelsea 2-1 at Old Trafford largely thanks to an attacking first-half display.

United started brightly, and they were immediately rewarded, as a flick from Benjamin Sesko found Bryan Mbeumo, who was fouled by Robert Sanchez, leaving Chelsea with 10 men after just four minutes.

United capitalised, and they took the lead just nine minutes later through Bruno Fernandes, and their attacking onslaught continued.

The home side doubled their lead thanks to a header from Casemiro, but the Brazilian was shown a second yellow card right before half-time, making the two sides level in terms of personnel.

Chelsea had the ball for most of the second-half, but they failed to threaten the United backline. Chelsea got a goal back in the 80th minute through Trevoh Chalobah, but United held on for all three points in the pouring Manchester rain.

Here are the player ratings from Saturday evening:

Altay Bayindir 6

Did not have much to do during the game, aside from collecting the odd cross and spraying the ball to the rest of the team. Had no chance with the Chelsea goal.

Matthijs de Ligt 8

Another colossal display from the Dutchman, winning a number of his duels and not giving Joao Pedro any space whatsoever. Dominant.

Harry Maguire 7

Made his first Premier League start of the season and looked very good on and of the ball.

Luke Shaw 7

A much-improved display from the Manchester Derby disaster. Made a number of crucial interceptions and blocks, while also provided some threat going forward.

Noussair Mazraoui 7

Calm and composed on the ball. While he is not the most efficient going forward, he is striking a good partnership with Bryan Mbeumo, and linked up very well with the Cameroonian on Saturday.

Casemiro 5

A hot and cold performance from the Brazilian. Scored yet another header against Chelsea, but then ruined United's one-man advantage by needlessly getting a second yellow card. Given his experience, he should have known better.

Bruno Fernandes 8

Much has been talked about his role in the team this season, yet there were no questions about him after this display. Timed his run to perfection for the opener to get his 100th United goal, before then dictating play during the match. Kept the United players calm despite undergoing plenty of pressure in the second-half.

Patrick Dorgu 6

Looked better than he did at City, and while he improved going forward, he still needs to sharpen up.

Bryan Mbeumo 7

Made a darting run to win the free-kick that got Sanchez sent off, and he was influential and effective on the ball. Chelsea struggled to deal with him, and he looks like a brilliant signing.

Amad 6

His movement was a constant threat to the Chelsea backline in the first-half, looking very good with his slick passing. Should have squared it to Sesko in the first-half to seal the win.

Benjamin Sesko 7

Much more involved than he was in previous games, and got the flick on that found Mbeumo for the red card. Made a number of good runs and was constantly looking to get on the ball. Withdrawn at half-time following the red card.

Substitutions

Manuel Ugarte 6

Brought on at half-time to fill the space vacated by Casemiro. Dealt with plenty of the Chelsea pressure and looks better when sitting back to defend.

Mason Mount 6

Returned to the squad and came on with plenty of energy.

Matheus Cunha 7

Helped United get the win over the line and held up the ball very well.

Leny Yoro 5

Lost Chalobah for the Chelsea goal.

Kobbie Mainoo 6

Came on for Fernandes in the final 10 minutes, and held on to the ball for United.

Manager - Ruben Amorim: 8

Selected the right team to match Chelsea's formation, and while he played with plenty of defensive players, there was a lot of attacking fluidity and creativity on the pitch. United were electric in the first-half and then had to dig deep in the second. Timed his substitutions well. This win will do him a world of good right now.
