Manchester United squandered the opportunity to go up to third after dropping points away to West Ham United on Tuesday night, only getting a draw thanks to Benjamin Sesko's stoppage-time equaliser.

The match was off to a rather slow start, with neither team really creating any major opportunities on goal. United's biggest chance came after a neat set-piece, with Luke Shaw's shot being cleared from off the line by Aaron Wan-Bissaka.

However, West Ham did manage to open the scoring in the second half, after some indecisive defending from Luke Shaw, failing to with a ball in the middle of the pitch, with Jarrod Bowen going down the wing before finding Tomas Soucek, who tucked it past Senne Lammens.

Casemiro thought he had drawn United level just moments later with a thumping header, but the goal was disallowed by VAR after a very tight offside call.

United struggled to create any real opportunities as they chased the game. That was until the 96th minute, when a Bryan Mbeumo cross found Sesko, who hit an excellent finish first time to put it into the back of the net and earn United a point.

Here are how United's players fared at the London Stadium:

Senne Lammens 7

A couple of solid stops from Lammens, including one from Crysencio Summerville. Could not have done much more for the West Ham goal, and other than that, looked relatively solid.

Diogo Dalot 5

Got booked for a challenge on Summerville and he was constantly chasing the winger, struggling to handle his trickery. Very nervy.

Harry Maguire 7

Seemed to be clutching his hamstring throughout most of the game, but he continued to put his body on the line on many occasions. Won a number of duels and kept Taty Castellanos very quiet. Hopefully his injury is nothing serious.

Lisandro Martinez 6

A rather strange game from Lisandro Martinez. The Argentine got on the ball a lot and was rather efficient with his passing, looking to break the lines, but was struggling to do so at times. Did a very neat turn in the United box. Should have done much better to close down Bowen for the West Ham goal.

Luke Shaw 4

Bowen proved to be a very difficult opponent for Shaw. The full-back was utterly outsmarted for the West Ham goal, where he should have done so much better having let a long ball bounce rather than dealing with it immediately. Tried to go forward at times, but his end-product was poor.

Casemiro 6

Desperately unlucky not to get his name on the scoresheet after making an excellent run to head in Kobbie Mainoo's cross. A decent display, running up and down the pitch to help United, reading the game well and being very combative. Seemed leggy at times.

Kobbie Mainoo 6

Mainoo looked really good on the ball, helping to find his teammates in very tight spaces, and even delivering a peach of a cross for Casemio's disallowed goal. However, he was also found out defensively for the West Ham goal, as he should have been more aware of Soucek's run, with the West Ham man running from in behind him. Neat, but still has aspects of his game to improve on.

Amad 5

Struggled to get in the game. The Ivorian seemed leggy and while he constantly tried to beat El Hadji Malick Diouf, the West Ham full-back had the beating of him. Was not his usual, efficient self.

Bruno Fernandes 6

Constantly looked to make things happen, but nothing was coming off for the United captain. Still popped up with some excellent passes to bring others into play, but probably needed a bit more.

Matheus Cunha 5

Tried to drop deep in order to get on the ball more, but he was struggling to find the pockets of space that he tends to thrive from.

Bryan Mbeumo 5

Completely cut out of the game as West Ham marked him very closely. Never got involved that much up until the closing stages when United really pushed for an equaliser. Delivered the cross to Sesko, which the Slovenian did really well to convert from, considering it was not the best.

Substitutes

Leny Yoro 7

Came on for the hobbling Maguire and his introduction seemed like a blessing. Just when West Ham were looing to use their pace on the counter, Yoro matched that, and made two excellent tackles when he was clearly outnumbered.

Benjamin Sesko 7

Probably should have started or at least come on earlier in the game. While he started relatively slow, he did excellently to convert a rather poor Mbeumo cross and fire it into the net with a smart finish. Seems to be playing his way into the team as the weeks wear on.

Joshua Zirkzee 6

Had little time to make an impact but he came very close with a header just before Sesko's equaliser.

Head Coach - Michael Carrick 6

Carrick's first draw in his first five games in charge of the club. United were not at their best, with plenty of players looking leggy. Carrick probably should have made some changes to the team that started, and probably should have made the substitutions earlier than he did. However, the substitutions did very well to get United back in the game and the team eventually persevered and rescued a point. Needs to get the players going again to show the form that they have been displaying over recent weeks.
