Manchester United ended their home campaign with a scintillating 3-2 win over Nottingham Forest, securing third place in the Premier League as Casemiro bid farewell to Old Trafford.
United went in front early on thanks to a brilliant finish from Luke Shaw, who rifled the ball into the net to score his first goal in over three years.
While United looked bright in the opening 45 minutes, most of the action came in the second half. Forest levelled things up after Morato connected well to an Elliot Anderson, putting it past Senne Lammens. However, United responded straight away, as Matheus Cunha got on the end of a move, slotting the ball into the net. While there was a lengthy VAR check due to a possible Bryan Mbeumo handball, the goal was given, and United restored their lead.
Later in the game, Bruno Fernandes looked to get the assist record on multiple occasions, with forwards failing to produce the vital finish. That was until Mbeumo finally found his shooting boots again, as a sensational cross from Fernandes found the Cameroonian, who was there to poke the ball home, giving Bruno his 20th Premier League assist of the season. Morgan Gibbs-White got another goal back for Newcastle late in the game, thanks to another brilliant cross from Anderson.
The match finished 3-2 to United, ensuring Michael Carrick's side ended their final game at Old Trafford on a high note.
Here are the player ratings from United's last match at Old Trafford of the season:
Senne Lammens 7
The Belgian produced a stunning save in the first half to deny Gibbs-White an early goal, and was sharp throughout the whole game. Made some brilliant stops and came out to claim the ball on more than one occasion. Could not do much about the goals. Got away with one when he passed the ball to Kobbie Mainoo who was being pressed, but luckily the United midfielder won a free-kick.
Diogo Dalot 7
A relatively solid display from the Portuguese full-back. Crucial for the build-up play and his work-rate was sublime. Made some excellent recovery challenges, while keeping it simple going forward.
Harry Maguire 6
Got off to a relatively shaky start but grew into the game as it wore on. Won plenty of aerial balls and showed aggression in his play.
Lisandro Martinez 7
Looked much more solid than last week and he was very confident on and off the ball.
Luke Shaw 8
One of the standout performers and the early goal did wonders for his confidence. Struck the ball excellently for the finish and looked an ever-present danger going forward. A brilliant campaign for the seasoned defender.
Casemiro 7
Possibly could have had a goal in the first half after the ball ricocheted to him. He was much better in the second half, being adventurous with his passing and marshalling the midfield with Kobbie Mainoo. A fitting farewell.
Kobbie Mainoo 8
Kept things simple but he was a joy to watch. Barely dispossessed and was always looking to progress the ball forward. His partnership with Casemiro will be desperately missed. Now it is a case of signing the right midfielder to sit alongside him.
Amad 6
A much improved display from the Ivorian, who was a constant threat down the right. Could have probably been more decisive in the final third, but he was dangerous throughout the whole game.
Bruno Fernandes 8
A record-equalling display from the United captain. Created so many chances for his teammates, and he probably should have broken the record much earlier. Eventually got the milestone after Mbeumo finished from a sublime cross. Fernandes was at his creative best and he was an absolute joy to watch.
Matheus Cunha 7
Looked bright on the ball and produced a very cool finish to score in front of the Stretford End. He probably should have also got an assist for an excellent pass to Mbeumo in the first half. A really positive showing from the Brazilian, who was determined to create chances for the other forwards.
Bryan Mbeumo 7
A hit or miss performance from Mbeumo. He was doing everything right apart from the finish throughout most of the game. After squandering a couple of opportunities, particularly created by Fernandes, he eventually got his goal, being in the right place at the right time. Great determination to get on the scoresheet.
Substitutes
Patrick Dorgu 7
Came on and looked really sharp straight away, coming very close to scoring.
Mason Mount 7
Brought on, and was calm and composed on and off the ball, working tirelessly.
Joshua Zirkzee 4
He was brought on for what could be his final Old Trafford display, and he was so disappointing in front of goal. Made a mess of a late opportunity, and he seemed slow to react whenever his teammates tried to find him.
Head Coach - Michael Carrick 8
Sunday afternoon proved to be a momentous game for Carrick, in a week where he reportedly signed a deal to become the permanent head coach. Set his team up in a way where they attacked fluidly, looking adventurous whenever they went forward, creating chance after chance. While there were some gaps defensively that will need to be sorted out, Carrick has got United playing exciting football again.
