Manchester United were shockingly knocked out of the EFL Cup Second Round against League Two side Grimsby Town despite coming from behind, losing on penalties.
Grimsby looked the better of the two sides in the first-half, with United looking more of a League Two side than the home side did. United made several mistakes with plenty of loose passes and horrible touches, and they ultimately paid the price, as Charles Vernam went past Andre Onana at his near post midway through the first-half.
The United goalkeeper committed another error only a few minutes later, flapping at a cross before Tyrell Warren put the ball into the net.
Ruben Amorim proceeded to make several changes at half-time and in the second-half to inspire a fightback, and United seized control of the match, pinning Grimsby back.
Bryan Mbeumo got his first goal for the club with a tidy finish, handing United a lifeline, before Harry Maguire got a header to put United level in the 89th minute.
The game as a result went to penalties, and after Clarke Oduour and Matheus Cunha both failed to convert their efforts, it went to sudden death. Mbeumo eventually missed his attempt, hitting the crossbar as Grimsby won 12-11.
Here are the player ratings from a shocking night at Blundell Park:
Andre Onana 2
Onana returned to the starting line-up for the first time since May, and he had a night to forget yet again. He should have done better for the first goal, and fumbled the ball for the second. Saved one of the penalties, but should have been much stronger for the rest of the attempts. Needs to be replaced.
Tyler Fredricson 2
A really poor game from a youngster who has so much potential. Grimsby constantly targeted him and they got the better of him. Did not have much help from Diogo Dalot and ended up being substituted at half-time.
Harry Maguire 6
One of the only steady players in United's team in the first-half, and United could have been further behind had he not made some crucial interceptions. Scored late on to give United a sliver of hope.
Ayden Heaven 4
Did not have his usual composure and seemed too casual. Did not settle down and was overwhelmed at times.
Diogo Dalot 3
Atrocious on multiple occasions. Did not offer enough cover for Fredricson and did not offer much going forward.
Manuel Ugarte 2
Another dismal display from the Uruguayan. Clattered into Amad in the build-up for the first goal, and it seems like after over a year at the club, he has not yet found his feet. Substituted at the break.
Kobbie Mainoo 5
One of the most composed on the pitch in the first-half, and deservedly played the whole match. While it is not a display that will force him into the team on the weekend, it was decent enough.
Patrick Dorgu 3
Proved to be an option for United to get out of defence on many occasions in the first-half, yet he did lots of running with little end-product.
Amad 2
Horrible performance from one of United's standout stars last season. Lost the ball constantly in the first-half and clashed with Ugarte for the first goal. Improved in the second-half but still clearly not up to speed.
Matheus Cunha 4
Looked to impose himself, but was constantly getting outmarked by the Grimsby backline. The United midfield did not find him enough and he became a frustrated figure. Horrible penalty.
Benjamin Sesko 5
Still not fully up to speed with the rest of his teammates, yet he found decent pockets of space on occasions and carved out chances for himself. Once he becomes accustomed to English football, he could be an excellent striker.
Substititons
Bruno Fernandes 6
Spurred United on in the second-half and gave his team some form of control by calming things down and dictating play.
Matthijs de Ligt 7
United's best player on the day. Brought on and actually defended very well, while also being one of United's most potent attackers. Made a series of good runs in the channels as United looked for an equaliser, and also put himself about.
Bryan Mbeumo 6
Looked much better than he did in the weekend and managed to get his first goal for the club with a neat finish. Ended up missing the decisive penalty.
Mason Mount 6
Did very well to inject some urgency in the team, and looked very busy. Crossed excellently to Maguire for the equaliser.
Joshua Zirkzee 5
Not that involved, but great to see him back.
Manager - Ruben Amorim: 5
Amorim looked completely furious during the game, having witnessed that horror show in the first-half. He picked a team that should be good enough to comfortably ease past Grimsby, yet the team let him down with a very, very poor first-half display. Rightly made a series of changes at the break and early in the first-half to inspire a fightback, and it seemed to work.
However, it seems like Amorim's time at the club is not getting any easier, with this defeat not reflecting well on him whatsoever. Yet the players should take much of the blame tonight. These players should never be putting on such a horrific performance against a League Two side.
