Manchester United crashed out of the FA Cup after a torrid performance at Old Trafford saw them beaten by Brighton, as Darren Fletcher's side struggled to cut the visitors open.

United started relatively strong, with Diogo Dalot having a golden opportunity inside the opening few minutes, after a perfect pass from Matheus Cunha, but the Portuguese full-back somehow failed to convert the shot. Brighton responded, and they went in front in the 12th minute, as some sloppy defending saw Brajan Gruda find the back of the net.

United pushed forward in search of an equaliser, but Brighton were the ones to find the net next, as Gruda set up Danny Welbeck in the second-half, who hit a powerful strike that left Senne Lammens with no chance.

The home side were struggling to find any avenues through the Brighton backline, with their sheer lack of creativity being evident. United found a goal back late on thanks to a header from Benjamin Sesko, but it came all too late. Shea Lacey, who was promising in his cameo, ended up seeing red late on for dissent, adding further fuel to the fire.

As a result, United will finish the season with just 40 games played, and having played less cup games than they have had managers.

Here are how the players did against Brighton:

Senne Lammens 5

A calamitous mistake in the first-half when he passed it straight to Brighton's forwards, yet was lucky he was not punished, and made a relatively good stop from the attempt. Had no chance with either goal.

Diogo Dalot 3

A performance to forget, but also one that has become too common for Dalot. Had a very early miss that he should have done much better from, and was all over the place defensively, getting decisions wrong at both ends of the pitch. His time at United surely must be coming to an end.

Leny Yoro 5

Seemed to be stuck in no man's land for both goals, struggling to be alert at times. Had some good moments, such as some neat sliding tackles, but we are only seeing slight glimmers of his qualities.

Lisandro Martinez 6

Tried to up the pace of play and make things happen. Came close with some attempts, but also should have held his own when faced with the Brighton forwards.

Patrick Dorgu 6

One of United's brightest sparks going forward, with the midfielders constantly looking for him as the out ball. Not bad at either end of the pitch, but also should have been more aware of where Gruda was for both goals.

Manuel Ugarte 5

Hustled and bustled, but ultimately was not good enough. The Uruguayan was solid at times defensively, yet his passing was atrocious yet again. United needed more from him.

Kobbie Mainoo 6

Tried to make things happen as he was granted only his second start of the season. Seemed to slow the pace down when United really needed the ball to be passed quicker, but also often made the right decision with his incisive passing. Needed to do more to play himself into the Manchester Derby team though.

Bruno Fernandes 6

United constantly looked for him as their source of creativity, but when he is not at his best, United are clearly not at theirs either. He was all over the pitch, tracking back to win the ball when his teammates cannot do so, and was also having shots down the other end. Came close with two free-kicks, and supplied the corner for Sesko's goal.

Mason Mount 4

Not one of his best displays this season, and struggled on the right. Did not have an impact on the game, with United often playing down the left instead.

Matheus Cunha 4

Seemed a shadow of himself. Looked to create but ultimately lost the ball far too often for many fans' likings. Disappointing.

Benjamin Sesko 6

One of the few positives from the match was that Sesko was once again getting involved regularly. Had some chances that he should have done much better from, including one in the first-half, and a header in the second-half. Worked tirelessly and also got a goal with a powerful header.

Substitutes

Shea Lacey 5

Produced some direct wing play that United simply needed at the time. Lifted United with some sharp moments of play and showcase of his raw talent. However, he voiced his frustration and got a second yellow card, much to his disappointment.

Joshua Zirkzee 5

Another game where Joshua Zirkzee did not make an impact in. The match seemed to pass him by.

Harry Maguire 6

Brought on to be a nuisance in the Brighton penalty area, and had a late attempt easily saved by Steele.

Casemiro 5

Did not have much time to make an impact, trying to deliver first-time balls.

Head Coach - Darren Fletcher 6

His second United match could not have gone much worse, but he is not to blame. Announced a very strong line-up that should have done much better, especially against a rotated Brighton side. However, United never really seemed up for it, and possibly should have made some changes earlier in the match. His time as caretaker will be one to forget.
