Manchester United secured four wins on the bounce for the first time in two years after dispatching a Tottenham side that were down to 10 men at Old Trafford on Saturday.
The match started off relatively even, with Michael Carrick's United slightly edging it. However, just when Tottenham were getting more on the ball, Cristian Romero was shown a straight red card, his second sending off of the season, after stamping on Casemiro's ankle, right on the half-hour mark.
United instantly seized control of the match, having a wide array of opportunities on Guglielmo Vicario's goal. Right before the break, they took the lead after a well-worked corner saw Kobbie Mainoo find Bryan Mbeumo, who tucked his shot past the Italian goalkeeper and into the net.
United pushed and pushed in search of a second after the break, yet Vicario was putting up a good fight. That was until the 81st minute, when a Diogo Dalot cross missed Benjamin Sesko, but found Bruno Fernandes, and the United captain made no mistake from close range. United had more shots on goal later on, particularly when Sesko failed to score with the final kick of the game.
As a result, United made it four wins in a row, as Carrick's start to life as manager of the club continues in sensational fashion. The win was United's first against Spurs since October 2022.
Here are our player ratings from the magnificent win:
Senne Lammens 6
Had a nervy moment with his feet early on, but he was then largely untroubled, coming out to claim the ball when needed. A spectator for large parts of the game.
Diogo Dalot 8
One of Dalot's best performances of the season. Had a decent effort in the second half, and was constantly looking to support Amad going forward. Produced an excellent cross for the second goal, as the Tottenham defence struggled to deal with it.
Harry Maguire 7
Struggled to deal with Xavi Simons in the early stages, but he grew into the game and started to dictate play. Handled Dominic Solanke very well.
Lisandro Martinez 6
Largely untroubled throughout the match, spreading the ball well with some cutting-edge passes. He did have a very loose touch in the second half that almost proved to be costly for United.
Luke Shaw 7
Made his 25th start of the season, and continued his fine run of form. Had a shot sting Vicario's palms in the second half, and was calm and composed throughout the match. Relatively untroubled defensively.
Casemiro 7
Another assured performance from the Brazilian, despite getting on the wrong end of Romero's challenge. He controlled the pace of the play and was always looking to link up with Kobbie Mainoo. Came off to a standing ovation.
Kobbie Mainoo 9
Class throughout. Produced a brilliant lay-off to Mbeumo for the opener, and he dictated the play over the course of the whole encounter, outmuscling the Spurs midfielders and producing some clever link-up play. Played Spurs' press very well and found space in tight areas.
Amad 6
Not Amad's brightest game ever, but he was still a threat. Made some darting runs and had a goal chalked off for offside.
Bruno Fernandes 8
A classic Fernandes performance. He faded in and out of the game, but when he was on the ball, he constantly looked to create. Got on the end of Dalot's cross to slot the ball into the net with a controlled finish, even if it came off his shin.
Matheus Cunha 7
He was desperately unlucky not to score from a stunning first-time strike in the first half. While he remained threatening, he faded as the game wore on.
Bryan Mbeumo 8
Another game, another goal for Mbeumo. The Cameroonian forward was a constant threat to the Tottenham backline, drifting out on the wings, dragging Micky van de Ven out wide. Took his goal excellently, slotting the ball into the back of the net with a delicate finish. His movement was sensational.
Substitutes
Benjamin Sesko 6
Made a number of excellent runs and put himself about. However, he squandered a huge chance with the final kick of the game, opting to take a header first time when he was all on his own.
Noussair Mazraoui 6
Helped give United more dynamism and assurance.
Manuel Ugarte 6
Solid and largely untroubled.
Joshua Zirkzee 6
Did not have much time to make an impact, but put himself about.
Tyler Fletcher 6
Came on for his Manchester United debut in stoppage time and got on the ball on a few occasions.
Head Coach - Michael Carrick 7
Started the same team as he did in the previous game, and it worked yet again. United looked more up for it than Tottenham and some of the link-up play was genuinely fabulous to watch. The midfield was fully in United's control and his side did well to secure the victory and look so good even with Spurs sitting back so much.
