Manchester United ended their dismal season with a rare Premier League win at Old Trafford, beating Aston Villa 2-0 on Sunday.
United were in complete control from the very start, looking much more comfortable than they did on Wednesday when they lost the UEFA Europa League Final. Their play was quick, sharp, and just needing the final finish to go into the net.
Villa, who were chasing UEFA Champions League football for next season, got a huge blow right before half-time, after Emi Martinez was sent off for bringing down Rasmus Hojlund who was through on goal.
The away side looked like they had taken the lead in the second-half when Morgan Rogers stole the ball from Altay Bayindir before putting it into the net, yet the referee had blown for a foul before the ball crossed the line.
United capitalised, and they went forward, with Bruno Fernandes finding Amad Diallo with a lofted ball, and the Ivorian headed Ruben Amorim's side ahead after countless chances being missed from the team.
United doubled their advantage at the end, with Amad being brought down in the box, and Christian Eriksen was given the chance to end his United career with a goal, and he did just that, stroking it into the net.
Here are our player ratings from the final day of the season:
Altay Bayindir 4
Had a very quiet first-half, barely being tested. He made a calamitous mistake in the second-half, fumbling the ball into Rogers' path, and was luckily bailed out by the referee opting to blow the whistle too early. Yet another display that did not convince anyone he should be starting regularly.
Victor Lindelof 7
Got a start on his final game as a Manchester United player, and while Villa tried to get at him, he was calm and composed, handling the forwards very well and also making some flurries forward. 284 appearances over eight years, and while he has had many ups and downs, he has been a great servant for the club.
Harry Maguire 7
Yet another solid display from the English defender, looking comfortable on and off the ball. Created an opportunity for Diogo Dalot with some neat footwork. Interesting to see how he fits in Amorim's plans for next season.
Ayden Heaven 7
While he had some shaky moments at the start, he grew into the game and became very composed on the ball. Made some brilliant recovery challenges that bailed United out. One for the future, and for the present. Will have a big role next season.
Noussair Mazraoui 6
Went down injured in the 20th minute with an apparent hamstring injury, but was very solid in the few minutes he had on the pitch. Needs time to rest and recover after a very demanding season from the Moroccan, having played over 50 games.
Casemiro 6
Was not troubled by the Villa midfield and controlled most of the play. Had a couple of shots on goal, including one that clipped the post and another that went over the bar. Could be a player that stays on next season to provide that much-needed experience and quality, but remains to be seen if he wants a last crack at European football.
Bruno Fernandes 8
Returned to form after a rather disappointing display in midweek. Created plenty of chances and also had a number of shots of his own. Played Amad in for the goal brilliantly, adding another assist to his impressive tally of 19 goals and 20 assists in all competitions.
Patrick Dorgu 6
Played better than he has done recently, and was a constant threat down the left. Energetic up and down the pitch.
Amad Diallo 8
Repeatedly looked to take players on and was linking up very well with those in and around him. Gave United the lead with an excellent header from a Fernandes cross, and then won a penalty. A question of what could have been had he been fit for more games. Will be a key player under Amorim next season.
Mason Mount 6
One of United's best players in the first-half, looking really active on and off the ball. Won a number of challenges and had some opportunities that went straight at Martinez. Faded in the second-half.
Rasmus Hojlund 6
Energetic and constantly involved with the play. Put in a brilliant cross for Mount who could not find the net, and was then brought down by the onrushing Martinez. Had a goal ruled out for offside, and probably deserved a goal today.
Substitutions:
Diogo Dalot 5
An early substitute after Mazraoui suffered an injury, and immediately hit the post with a strike. Substituted for Kobbie Mainoo at half-time to make full use of the numerical advantage over Villa.
Kobbie Mainoo 6
Brought on at half-time and was cool on the ball throughout. Won the ball before finding Hojlund for a chance that he could not score.
Jonny Evans 6
Came on for his final appearance in a United shirt after around five months without playing. Given a standing ovation for his time at the club during and after the match.
Christian Eriksen 7
Also brought on for his final United game, and was a threat in the short time he was on the pitch. Hit a free-kick just over the goal, then a strike that skimmed the bar. Got on the scoresheet after being gifted a penalty. A class player and one of United's most successful transfers in recent years.
Chido Obi 6
Made another appearance from off the bench and made a couple of nice runs. Interesting to see how many games he will get next season.
Manager - Ruben Amorim: 7
Got the team playing more enterprising football following a horrific performance on Wednesday. United fans got a glimpse of what the future could look like if the Board backs Amorim and gives him the players he needs.
With another season coming to a close, it will be interesting to see what the future holds for United under Amorim, especially with no European football next season.
